Agiodektini Church, Kampos Chios.
The famous mandarins of Chios were first cultivated in Kampos in the 19th century, when a mandarin tree from Malta was planted in one of the historic estates of the area. From this single tree began the cultivation that made Chios mandarins famous throughout the world. By the late 19th century, they were even exported to Buckingham Palace, with each fruit carefully wrapped in waxed paper to ensure it arrived in perfect condition.
Step into the elegant world of the Kampos of Chios on a private walking experience designed to reveal the hidden beauty of one of the island’s most distinctive historic landscapes. Behind the tall stone walls of Kampos lie fragrant citrus orchards, aristocratic mansions, and centuries of history shaped by trade, cultivation, and refined island life.
At your own relaxed pace, this private tour takes you along the quiet lanes and shaded paths of Kampos while uncovering the story of the area from the Genoese period to the present day. Together we explore the remarkable architecture of the historic estates built with the characteristic Thymianousiki stone, the wells and cisterns that sustained the orchards, and the unique lifestyle that developed around the cultivation of Chios’ famous mandarins.
The experience concludes at Citrus – Aroma Mnimis, a beautifully restored Kampos estate that now operates as a cultural and gastronomic space. Here you will have the opportunity to step inside the historic mansion and visit the Citrus Museum, where the history of citrus cultivation and everyday life in the orchards of Kampos comes to life through engaging exhibits.
After the tour, those who wish may remain in the estate’s peaceful garden café to enjoy coffee or dessert inspired by the island’s beloved citrus fruits.
