If you are looking for things to do in Chios beyond the obvious attractions, this walking tour of Kampos offers a unique opportunity to discover the island’s historic mansions and fragrant citrus gardens.
Kampos is a living cultural landscape where architecture, agricultural tradition, and history come together in perfect harmony. Behind its tall stone walls lie elegant mansions, fragrant citrus groves, and stories of trade that once connected Chios with Genoa, Smyrna, and the wider Mediterranean.
This walking tour reveals Kampos beyond its postcard beauty — as a social and economic phenomenon, a place where cultures coexisted, and a lasting symbol of Chian identity.
Have you ever wondered how a fertile plain of Chios evolved into a place of aristocratic estates, thriving commerce, and international prestige that reached the royal courts of Europe?
At a relaxed pace, with frequent stops and engaging storytelling, we uncover the life hidden behind the stone walls and their grand gateways.
Agiodektini Church, Kampos Chios.
The Chios mandarin was once considered one of the finest citrus fruits in Europe. In the 19th century, it was even exported to Buckingham Palace, with each fruit carefully wrapped, one by one, in waxed paper to ensure it arrived in perfect condition. This meticulous care was no coincidence — the mandarins of Kampos were regarded as a luxury product, prized for their exceptional aroma and quality, and sought after by the royal courts of Europe.
Kampos of Chios is one of the most distinctive historic settlements in the Aegean, a place where nature, architecture, and history have coexisted for centuries. Behind the tall stone walls lie lush orchards filled with orange and mandarin trees, impressive mansions, and pebble-paved courtyards that tell the story of a landscape closely connected to the cultivation of citrus fruits.
During this walking tour, we will stroll along the quiet roads and paths of Kampos while exploring the history of the area from the Genoese period to the present day. We will discover the unique architecture of the mansions built with the local Thymianousiki stone, the wells and cisterns that once provided the precious water needed for the orchards, and the way of life that developed around the cultivation of Chios’ famous mandarins.
The tour concludes at Citrus – Aroma Mnimis, a historic Kampos estate that today operates as a cultural and gastronomic space. Here we will have the opportunity to see the interior of the historic mansion and visit the Citrus Museum, where the history of citrus cultivation and everyday life in the orchards of Kampos comes to life. After the end of the tour, those who wish may stay and enjoy coffee or dessert with citrus flavors at the café located inside the lush orchard.
(Entrance to the museum is included in the tour price.)
