Did you Know?

Many of the delicate gold wreaths displayed in the Archaeological Museum of Thessaloniki were not meant to be worn in everyday life. Inspired by real plants such as oak, ivy and myrtle, they were created as symbols of honour, status and eternal remembrance — accompanying elite men and women into the afterlife in ancient Macedonia.

What to Expect

Step into one of Greece’s most important museums and discover the fascinating story of ancient Macedonia through extraordinary artefacts, hidden stories and expert interpretation.

During this guided experience, you will travel through thousands of years of history — from prehistoric settlements and everyday life to the splendour of the Macedonian kingdom and Roman Thessaloniki.

The Gold of Ancient Macedonia

One of the highlights of the museum is its spectacular collection of ancient Macedonian gold. Delicate wreaths inspired by oak, ivy and myrtle, exquisite jewellery and funerary treasures reveal how power, wealth and beliefs shaped elite society. But beyond their beauty lies a deeper story: what these precious objects reveal about honour, status and life after death in ancient Macedonia.

Everyday Life Through the Centuries

History is not only about kings and battles. Discover how ordinary people lived, worked, worshipped and raised their families thousands of years ago. From household objects and tools to pottery and personal belongings, the museum offers a fascinating glimpse into daily life across different periods.

Women, Beliefs and Ancient Rituals

What was the role of women in ancient Macedonia? What did people believe about life, death and the gods? Through figurines, offerings and symbolic artefacts, you will uncover fascinating stories about religion, identity, social roles and ancient traditions that often remain hidden behind museum labels.

Roman & Hellenistic Thessaloniki

Thessaloniki has always been a crossroads of cultures. Explore how the city flourished during the Hellenistic and Roman periods and discover artefacts that reveal its role as one of the most important urban centres of the ancient world.

Beyond the Museum Labels

This is more than a museum visit. Rather than simply observing objects behind glass, you will discover the stories, symbolism and human experiences hidden behind them — brought to life by a state-certified licensed guide.

Whether this is your first visit to Thessaloniki or you simply want to understand the city beyond its modern streets, this experience offers a fascinating journey into the stories that shaped Macedonia for thousands of years.
