Discover the city from its highest point in Ano Poli down to its vibrant historical center, following a journey through centuries of Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman history.
This experience is designed to give you a complete understanding of Thessaloniki — not just what you see, but what it means.
At a relaxed pace, with frequent stops and an interactive approach, we uncover stories and hidden aspects of Thessaloniki that are truly worth discovering.
Trigonion Tower, Ano Poli, Thessaloniki
The tour takes place entirely outdoors. No archaeological sites or museums are entered, therefore no admission ticket is required.
The Venizelou Metro Station is considered one of the most impressive examples of an “underground museum” worldwide. The city’s main Byzantine street, along with its shops, is preserved in situ — exactly where it functioned centuries ago. It was the central axis of Thessaloniki, continuously used for more than 1,600 years, from the Byzantine period through to modern times.
We begin where Thessaloniki unfolds before us. From this vantage point we understand why the city was built exactly here and how the walls protected its inhabitants.
We discover how entry into the city was controlled and how a city functioned when its gates closed every night.
More than a religious site, the monastery functioned as a place of hospitality, education and social activity.
We explore the role of the patron saint in shaping the identity of Thessaloniki and why the city became so closely connected to him. We descend into the crypt and discover the site of his martyrdom.
This was the beating heart of ancient Thessaloniki.
Professions, trade and public life come together to reveal a city that functioned dynamically — a living organism that established Thessaloniki as a key metropolis of the Mediterranean.
The tour concludes in front of a street that was never moved.
The Byzantine crossroads, its shops and urban life are revealed exactly where they once stood 16 centuries ago.
Here, history quite literally unfolds before your eyes.
The route is set at a relaxed pace, with plenty of stops for rest and photography, making it the perfect choice for anyone wishing to combine history with a pleasant city stroll.
The tour takes place even in light rain. However, in the event of severe weather (heavy rain, snow, strong winds etc.), it will be rescheduled for the safety of all participants.
Please arrive at the meeting point at least 10 minutes before the starting time.
Access to the archaeological remains at Venizelou Metro Station does not require a ticket, as they are located in a freely accessible area before the ticket gates.
In the event that access to the station is not possible due to circumstances beyond our control (such as strikes or temporary operational changes), the tour will be adapted and completed at the above-ground level of the site.
Wear comfortable shoes and bring water and sun protection (sunglasses, hats, sunscreen), especially during the hot summer months.
Appropriate dress is required for entry to the Church of Saint Demetrius, in accordance with church guidelines.
Men are advised to wear long trousers, while women should wear clothing that covers the shoulders and knees.
We recommend bringing water, and you’re welcome to carry your coffee or drink while enjoying the walk.
Feel free to capture the moments of the tour and share your experience on social media with #OhMyGuide! — we’d love to see it through your eyes!
