Trigonion Tower, Ano Poli, Thessaloniki
The tour takes place entirely outdoors. No archaeological sites or museums are entered, therefore no admission ticket is required.
Beneath the Church of Saint Demetrius lies one of Thessaloniki’s most fascinating hidden spaces: the Crypt of Saint Demetrius. Once part of a Roman bath complex and later transformed into a place of worship, it is traditionally believed to be connected to the imprisonment and martyrdom of the city’s patron saint.
During this private experience, we will descend into the Crypt itself — a rare opportunity to step beneath one of Thessaloniki’s most important monuments and experience a hidden layer of the city’s history from within.
Together, we will trace Thessaloniki’s story from its highest point in Ano Poli to the vibrant historical center, following a route that reveals how the city evolved through centuries of change. Beginning at Trigonion Tower, where Thessaloniki unfolds beneath us, we discover why the city was built exactly here and how its walls once protected its inhabitants. Passing through the historic Palaiologina Gate, we step into the medieval city and uncover how urban life functioned when the gates closed each evening. At Vlatadon Monastery, we explore a space shaped not only by faith, but also by education, hospitality and daily life.
At the Church of Saint Demetrius, we discover the story of Thessaloniki’s patron saint and descend into the Crypt itself — traditionally associated with his imprisonment and martyrdom — offering a rare opportunity to experience a hidden layer of the city’s history from within. Continuing to the Roman Agora, we uncover the rhythm of everyday life in ancient Thessaloniki, where trade, professions and public life once shaped a thriving Mediterranean metropolis. The experience concludes at Venizelou Metro Station, where an extraordinary archaeological discovery reveals a Byzantine street preserved exactly where it stood centuries ago — a moment where Thessaloniki’s past and present meet in the most remarkable way.
The tour takes place even in light rain. However, in the event of severe weather (heavy rain, snow, strong winds etc.), it will be rescheduled for the safety of all participants.
Please arrive at the meeting point at least 10 minutes before the starting time.
Access to the archaeological remains at Venizelou Metro Station does not require a ticket, as they are located in a freely accessible area before the ticket gates.
In the event that access to the station is not possible due to circumstances beyond our control (such as strikes or temporary operational changes), the tour will be adapted and completed at the above-ground level of the site.
Wear comfortable shoes and bring water and sun protection (sunglasses, hats, sunscreen), especially during the hot summer months.
Appropriate dress is required for entry to the Church of Saint Demetrius, in accordance with church guidelines.
Men are advised to wear long trousers, while women should wear clothing that covers the shoulders and knees.
We recommend bringing water, and you’re welcome to carry your coffee or drink while enjoying the walk.
