Rouketopolemos in Chios: The Most Explosive Easter in Greece

Rouketopolemos in Chios. The Most Explosive Easter in Greece

Easter in Greece is filled with traditions, symbolism, and deep emotion. Yet on one Aegean island, tradition takes on a truly… explosive character.

This is the famous Rouketopolemos of Chios, a unique custom that attracts visitors from around the world every year.

What is Rouketopolemos?

Rouketopolemos takes place every year on the night of the Resurrection, in the area of Vrontados, just outside Chios Town. Two local parishes, Saint Mark and Panagia Erithiani, “compete” by launching thousands of handmade rockets at each other.

The goal of each parish is to hit the bell tower of the opposing church, creating a spectacular display of light and sound that turns Easter night into an unforgettable experience.

A Tradition with Deep Roots

The origins of Rouketopolemos date back to the period of Ottoman rule, although its exact starting point remains unknown. Initially, locals celebrated Easter using small cannons (known in the local dialect as “trympounia”), which were banned in 1889 for safety reasons.

By the late 19th century, these cannons were gradually replaced by handmade rockets, shaping the tradition into the form that survives today.

Despite modern challenges and safety regulations, the custom continues to thrive thanks to the passion and dedication of the local community.

An Experience Like No Other

Rouketopolemos is not just a spectacle — it is a powerful experience that combines:

  • intense adrenaline
  • deep religious devotion
  • strong local identity and pride
  • truly unique visuals you won’t see anywhere else

Visitors in Chios during Easter have the chance to experience the celebration in a completely different and unforgettable way.
